Scope and Content | Explains decision to contact the States of Jersey Police in light of media publicity surrounding Haut de la Garenne to provide an account of their experiences as a resident of the home between 1976 and 1980. Gives details of background and early years. Born in 1963. Refers to alcoholism of mother and father and contacting the Samaritans after being locked out of house by parents. Describes initial temporary three-week stay at Haut de la Garenne which turned into a permanent placement of four years. Positive reflection of time at Haut de la Garenne in contrast to allegations about widespread abuse. No knowledge of hidden cells or sexual abuse whilst in residence. Witnessed physical abuse of children by staff at Haut de la Garenne, contextualising such incidents with norms of the time. Descriptions of physical abuse by means of corporal punishment, including recollections of confronting a female member of staff after witnessing physical abuse towards another girl in residence. Refers to this member of staff being employed at Brig-y-Don Children’s Home at time of statement. Recollections of sexual abuse by a female member of staff in the shower area in Dunluce group at Haut de la Garenne when aged 14.
