Sound recording of Fred Stoodley speaking about the Occupation and the years after. He was interviewed on 09/11/2004 by Stuart Nicolle for the Liberation to Coronation Oral History Project. Mr Stoodley speaks about not understanding what was different about Liberation, collecting german memorabilia, being allowed to go places he's never been, american and british soldiers, playing baseball, football and cricket, going to school and the differences with today, the influence of american and edwardian culture, talks about the fashion of the time, the introduction of jazz in Jersey, the jazz clubs, evading his parents curfew, band concert, the attitude of the police and pranks, his jobs at the harbour and at Huelin's, the new jobs during the potatoes and tomatoes season, the milk bar in Broad Street, the Muratti and the Jersey team, seeing a match of football on the television, school sports, the changes in St Helier in the 1960, Huelin's whistle, the fires after the liberation, his position in the communist party and the treatment of his leader, the controversy over the insular insurance tax, Jersey families, living in housing and the difference in attitude with today, shopping on tick, the forum cinema and the difference in seating for poor and rich people, the relashipship between childrens from different areas, various entertainment, fetes and the battle of floser, the royal visits, and the rivalry between Jersey and Guernsey.
