Education Department. Historic records of the Education Department dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Reference D/J
Scope and Content The Privy Council Committee on Education controlled education policy in Jersey until 1872. In 1872 this responsibility was transferred to the States on the condition that the States would fulfil the conditions of the Elementary Education Act, 1870, pay for schools to implement any recommendations of HM Inspectors and that the Inspectors would be allowed access to the schools. The Bailiff was appointed as President of the newly formed States Elementary Education Committee. By 1920 the States Elementary Education Committee had become the Public Instruction Committee and was responsible for all state education. In 2002 the Education Department merged with the Sport, Leisure and Recreation Department to form the Department of Education, Sport and Culture. The Education Department collection includes annual returns sent to the Department from individual schools, draft copies of the Committee Minutes, letter books and documents from individual schools.
