| Scope and Content | The Channel Islands Occupation Society. Jersey Branch, was formed in May 1971 by fifteen enthusiasts; membership has grown over the years to 480. The Society is a non-profit making organisation, dedicated to the preservation and recording of all aspects of the German occupation. Meetings are held throughout the year with an emphasis on outside excursions during the summer months and films and talks during the winter. The Society publish a Review annually, alternately with the Guernsey branch of the Channel Islands Occupation Society and regular newsletters. The Channel Islands were the most heavily fortified areas of Hitler's 'Atlantic Wall'-a line of massive defence works which stretched from the Baltic to the Spanish frontier. The local fortifications include some of the best surviving examples of their kind in Western Europe and many are of a design that is unique to the Channel Islands. The Society was given charge of some of the island's fortifications by the Public Works Committee. The eight German fortifications in the Society's care have been authentically restored and are open to the public. They are the Underground Command Bunker and Coastal Artillery Observation Tower at Noirmont Point, St Brelade, the 10.5cm Coastal Defence Gun and M19 Fortress Mortar Bunker with Tunnel System at Corbière, St Brelade, the Coastal Defence Gun and Anti-Tank Gun Casemate at La Carrière. St Brelade, the Heavy Machine-Gun Turret bunker at Val de la Mare, St Ouen, the Gun Emplacement and Underground Bunkers at Les Landes, St Ouen and the Anti-Tank Gun Casemate at Millbrook, St Lawrence. The collection has been catalogued according to the original order imposed by the depositor. |
