Scope and Content | Provides the account of a former male resident at Haut de la Garenne regarding sexual abuse suffered at the hands of Thomas Hamon, Tony Watton and Terence Jarrett. Refers to Hamon's association with St John Ambulance, referring to his relationship with a member of staff at Haut de la Garenne. Describes being abused by Hamon every week over a period of a year, followed by a pattern of sexual abuse by Tony Watton over a number of years. Notes that like Hamon, Watton was also in a relationship with a member of staff at Haut de la Garenne. Also refers to abuse by Jarrett, describing how he reported abuse to a member of staff. Refers to Jarrett's conviction and imprisonment for the abuse, noting lack of support from friends or Haut de la Garenne in aftermath. Describes recommencement of abuse by Watton led to him stealing Watton's car, and subsequent transfer to borstal. Describes revenge plot, noting that in 1997 he was caught bringing cannabis into Jersey which he intended to plant on [Watton]. Notes that he admitted drugs smuggling and was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment, but broke silence and spoke out about abuse in court. Describes subsequent police investigation and charges brought against Watton involving a number of boys, noting that Watton committed suicide in 2001 before the case came to court. Notes that the ensuing police investigation resulted in Hamon admitting to abusing 8 boys between 1964 and 1989, mentioning his death in 2006. Also describes Roger Holland, another ex-member of St John Ambulance, as awaiting sentencing following admission of offences. Also notes that Jarrett is believed to have died in the early 1990s. Includes thoughts of the former resident regarding desire for abuse to come to light, even if abusers are dead. |
