Scope and Content Evidence from Mario Lundy relating to his time as a member of staff at Les Chênes Residential School. Includes remarks about the Merit Award System, referring to perception that some staff were more strict than others in respect of the application of the Merit Award System and in the expectations of young people. Refers to a complaint made by Monique Webb to Witness 108 about Witness 246 driving whilst drunk in charge of the minibus. States that he was made aware of the complaint but that the Principal handled it, noting that Witness 246 was dealing with a tragic personal misfortune. States that there was no direct counselling support provided to Witness 246 in respect of this but that he was given some time off and support in school. Comments on remarks by Mrs Webb about Witness 246 turning to alcohol but never smelling alcohol on his breath whilst on duty, noting how this contrast with accounts from a number of ex-pupils in their evidence to the Inquiry. Outlines understanding that Witness 246 consumed alcohol during the day at lunchtime prior to coming on shift. States that he has no knowledge of any incident of Witness 246 coming in under the influence of alcohol whilst he was Principal. Comments on his notice of a minibus incident involving Witness 246. Also refers to discussion about how to safeguard the protection of the children in such circumstances and asserts that there were no concerns about Witness 246's safety in respect of him working in an area of the school with a number of tools. States that there was no indication that Witness 246 was drunk at the time of incident, noting that the matter was reported to the Police. Refers to allegations in respect of Witness 246 physically abusing children in the classroom and of Witness 246 smelling of alcohol during the course of these incidents. Refers to comments by Ms Webb that Witness 246 had a short fuse, stating that Witness 246 was occasionally too strict with the young people but that he never witnssed any incident where Witness 246 physically attacked anyone.
