Scope and Content | • Email dated 5 August 2008 from John Edmonds to William Bailhache titled The Maguires. Attaches a review note of the evidence in the case against the Maguires and a first draft of a press release. Includes remarks about making the Deputy Bailiff aware of the contents of the press release, referring to information in the public domain on the blog of Senator [Stuart] Syvret relating to Michael Birt and Michael Wherry. Also refers to sending the press release to Graham Power. • Memorandum dated 5 August 2008 from John Edmonds, Principal Legal Adviser to William Bailhache, Attorney General titled Alan and Jane Maguire. Describes having conducted a review of the material of the case against Alan and Jane Maguire with a view to establishing the full effect of new material come to light since the original decision to halt criminal proceedings against the Maguires in 1998. Describes difficulties with the case, referring to issues regarding lack of corroboration of evidence and conflicting evidence, commenting on advice of Ian Christmas in 1998. Expresses satisfaction with the decision made in 1998, and comments on the prospect of conviction in light of the new evidence that has emerged since 1998. • Draft of a press release by the Law Officers' Department. Refers to the case against Alan and Jane Maguire in 1998, commenting on the media coverage about the case and the decision of the Attorney General to abandon the prosecution of the Maguires on the grounds of insufficient evidence.
