Scope and Content • Letter dated 8 October 1973 from the Director, Social Work Service, Department of Health and Social Security to the Director of Social Services of County Councils, County Borough Councils, London Borough Councils and the Common Council of the City of London. Refers to a report of a study group on non-accidental injury to children held at Tunbridge Wells on 15 to 18 May 1973. Refers to developments in the field of non-accident injury to young children and previous advice on the management of the subject circulated to various agencies involved in child care including health and social services departments, medical and nursing staffs of hospitals, doctors and students. • Departmental Instruction issued by Dorset Social Services Department on the matter of non-accidental injury to children. Dated 21 December 1976. Lists effective date as 1 March 1977. Outlines the scope and purpose of the Instruction and sets out the statutory duty of a Social Services Department in respect of non-accidental injury referrals. Sets out details of initial action by non-social worker staff, duty social worker or standby officers and by team leaders receiving non-accidental injury referrals. Provides notes for professional guidance in respect of investigations by social workers, in relation to checks, visits and general action, details urgent action that may be taken, and outlines arrangements regarding case conferences held in cases of sufficient concern. Also sets out details of the duties of the primary agency and details of the process regarding registration of children subject to non-accidental injury referrals. Includes two appendices setting out professional notes for team leaders and a summary noted format for case conferences.
