Refers to interview dated 31 March 2008 at States of Jersey Police Station, Rouge Bouillon, in the presence of Detective Constable Evans, the contents of which are described below. Background and Home Life Born in Jersey in 1962. Refers to consequences of mother and father’s separation for Witness 45 and her siblings, mentioning admission to Haut de la Garenne and transfer to care of grandparents. Institutions Describes life at Haut de la Garenne from age of three, arriving in 1965 and leaving in July 1967. Details provision of lockers and beds in the dormitories, and playing outside on the Dolmen. Names Haut de la Garenne member of staff [Colin] Tilbrook. Recalls visits to Haut de la Garenne by potential foster parents, including her future foster mother and father, moving into a Family Group Home with them and her siblings in July 1967. Describes the foster mother as a strict Catholic, in contrast to Witness 45’s attendance at a Church of England Sunday school. Details transfer to La Preference Children’s Home, where punishments and beatings did not occur. Social Services Recalls visits to Haut de la Garenne by [C A] Smith and [Patricia] Thornton of Children’s Services. Abuse and Consequences Recalls Haut de la Garenne’s unpleasant atmosphere, and instances of emotional abuse and physical abuse metered as corporal punishment. Describes emotional and physical abuse by foster parents, naming foster mother repeatedly, and foster father on one occasion. Describes neglect, mentioning being forced to eat out of date and rancid food. Refers to discovery of marks by staff at St Helier Girls School, and discussion with headmistress Mrs Harris. Recalls that two of her friends also knew of the abuse due to one having witnessed the foster mother physically abusing Witness 45 on one occasion. Details attempted suicide at school following years of physical abuse. Describes sexual abuse by two man unconnected to the Family Group Home, naming Roger Horrobin [Horobin] who was later prosecuted. Refers to repeated suicide attempts throughout adulthood, and difficulties with social life as a result of abuse. Events since leaving care Recounts emotional consequences of abuse and childhood experiences in care.
