Background and Home Life Refers to birth in 1956 in Jersey. Describes father as an alcoholic, and mentions mother’s work to support the family. Institutions Details being sent to Brig-Y-Don Children’s Home for six or seven months, before moving to Haut de la Garenne at the age of approximately seven with his brothers, whilst his sisters were sent elsewhere. Describes being separated from his brothers upon his arrival at Haut de la Garenne, and being taken to a dormitory by a female member of staff. Describes dormitory where fifteen male residents slept. Details strict regime at Haut de la Garenne, mentioning baths, showers. Recalls other residents at Haut de la Garenne, mentioning his best friend, and their friendship prior to, and after, their admission to Haut de la Garenne. Discusses change in his best friend during his residency at Haut de la Garenne, and his best friend’s suicide at Haut de la Garenne. Mentions that his best friend’s distress at being regularly threatened with Borstal. Comments on effect of his best friend’s death on his best friend’s brother. Told Child Care Officer [Jim] Thomson, described as the Head of Social Services, that he needed to stop visiting the couple at weekends. Reports that [Jim] Thomson accused Witness 341 of lying about the abuse. Recalls confiding in Ian Smith [C A Smith], the head of Children’s Services, as well as Child Care Officer [Hal] Coomer and [Children’s Officer] [Patricia] Thornton, and their lack of appropriate response. Refers to kindness of [Child Care Officer] Miss [Mrs] Bygraves when he confided in her. Refers to need for surgery due to physical abuse. Comments on difficulties in relationships due to emotional abuse. Events after leaving care Refers to consequences of abuse on his behaviour as an adult, mentioning alcohol and drugs, and involvement in crime. Describes childhood experiences as scarring him emotionally and physically. Refers to pictures of underground rooms [at Haut de la Garenne] with a bath tub inside, as shown on the television.
