Recalls moving to Jersey with his family when he was aged 2. Recalls eating his meals and mixing with other residents at Haut de la Garenne. Details the structure and organisation of Haut de la Garenne, mentioning division into different age groups including the West Wing, intermediates and seniors. Notes that after 18 years of age, resident children would leave Haut de la Garenne or be sent to prison or borstal. Includes positive recollections of Christmas time at Haut de la Garenne, mentioning presents, Christmas meal, a tradition involving a Christrmas pudding, and appearances by Father Christmas on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Includes recollections about rules at Haut de la Garenne, commenting on mealtimes. Recalls children being given unwanted food repeatedly until it was finished. Recalls getting a scar on his hand after trying to cut a stale loaf of bread for want of getting something to eat. Recalls daily routine of staff checking the children's shoes and hands before being allowed to leave Haut de la Garenne. Recalls being made to watch the news on the television and being asked questions on the broadcasted news, noting that children were punished if they could not answer. Provides a description of a male staff member, describing him as dominant. Recalls incident whereby Witnes 485 was physically abused by the male staff member when he was aged 7 after tethering a pigeon. Describes injuries sustained by abuse, noting that he had to go to hospital for treatment on his hand or arm. Includes recollections of other members of staff and their families, including a male and his wife and son with whom Witness 485 would play scalextric, kitchen staff and another couple with children. Recalls there being two cells at Haut de la Garenne. Notes that each cell had bulletproof glass and radiators with bars, recalling an incident whereby a male resident was placed in a cell after absconding and pulled off one of the radiators bars. Notes that children were placed in the cell for weeks, commenting on lack of facilities therein. Also recalls being take to a naturist camp and further incidents of sexual abuse by the female non-staff member, comparing experiences to events in the film The Graduate. Also gives details of sexual abuse by a female staff member aged between 20 and 30 years old when Witness 485 was aged 15. Recalls conversation with a school friend, referring to the end of his friendship with him upon discovering that the female non-staff member had had sexual intercourse with him. Recalls visits by individuals who would involve themselves in sexual activities, and visits by social workers whilst in residence at Haut de la Garenne. Recalls numerous occasions whereby he took part in sexual activity in the presence of the female non-staff member involving her friends. Describes being told by a female resident who had been physically abused by her mother or another relative that the female non-staff member had abused her from the age of 6, asserting that he never witnessed the abuse. Describes breaking off contact with the male staff member when Witness 485 was in his early 20s, recalling attending his funeral to make sure that he was dead. Recalls discovering a hole in the attic floorboards above the intermediate girls' bathrooms, commenting on access to the attic and the nature of the hole. Statement finishes with Witness 485 reflecting on her experiences during his childhood at Haut de la Garenne. Comments on impact of abuse by the female non-staff member on Witness 485's relationships with women. Refers to disclosure of abuse suffered to his psychologist, commenting on detail given on that occasion.
