Scope and Content

1. Minutes of the 2nd Meeting of the Education Committee held on 10 January 1961. Lists the following as present: Deputy of St Saviour Brigadier R C Macpherson, Deputy of St Saviour Mrs P Green, Deputy of St Helier K A Baal, Deputy of St John F E Luce, Deputy of St Helier C A Goodsman, the Director of Education H C A Wimberley, Chief Clerk Lieutenant Colonel N Le M Stevenson, and Miss K E Chalker, Secretary. Notes the appointment of Deputy R C Macpherson as Vice President of the Education Committee. Refers to the approval of amendments of a draft Bill to authorise the transfer of the trust funds of the Jersey Female Orphans' Home from the public of the Island to the States. Also refers to discussion about the appointment of a peripatetic teacher of wind instruments, and negotiations regarding the purchase of land in St Brelade from the beneficiaries under the Will of the late John Huelin for the creation of a western secondary school. Details the appointment of Senator John Le Marquand, Deputy R C Macpherson, Deputy K A Baal and F de L Bois to the Victoria College Sub-Committee. 2. Minutes of the 4th Meeting of the Education Committee held on 8 February 1961. Refers to matters regarding individual children. Details the approval of a Bill to revise the Adoption of Children (Jersey) Law 1947 relating to the adoption of children and the approval of Minutes of the Children's Section Sub-Committee dated 11 January 1961. States that an assistant housefather at Haut de la Garenne appointed as from 1 December 1960 had admitted allegations made against him by a male resident and the referral of the matter to the Attorney General. Refers to the referral of the question of establishing a day nursey in Jersey to the Children's Section Sub-Committee, and acceptance of a bequest of estate to the Jersey Home for Boys in the will of the late Mary Rose Rolstone.
