Background and Home Life Describes spending the majority of his childhood in some form of care. Institutions Includes references to his time at Norcott Villa [Family Group Home], Haut de la Garenne, Grouville School and in foster care. Recalls being at Norcott Villa from 1972 aged 3 before being boarded-out with a female member of staff at Norcott Villa aged 7 for six months. Recalls moving to Haut de la Garenne in 1977. Includes recollections of staff at Haut de la Garenne including Mr Thompson [Jim Thomson], [Superintendent], Mr [William] Gilbert, [Deputy Superintendent], Tony Jordan and Morag Jordan. Includes descriptions of physical appearances and personalities of Thomson and Gilbert, Morag Jordan's association with Baintree and recollection of Gilbert as taking over from Thomson after his departure. Also includes recollections of other children in residence, including a boy in Dunluce. Recalls physical abuse amongst residents at Haut de la Garenne. Children's Services Names Mrs Chapel [Brenda Chappell] as his Child Care Officer at the time that he was placed at Haut de la Garenne. Abuse and Consequences Gives details of sexual abuse by an unknown male who was possibly a member of staff at Haut de la Garenne. Recalls inidents happening en route to Claymore and in the boys' shower rooms in Dunluce over the summer period between 1979 and 1980. Recollections of physical abuse by Gilbert, recalling being caned by Gilbert whilst being made to run around outside barefoot in pyjamas. Recalls a female member of staff who witnessed the incident stating her ill opinion of Gilbert's actions to another staff member. Gives details of physical abuse by Tony Jordan whilst Witness 36 was a pupil at Grouville School, mentioning Jordan's obsession with inspecting childrens' shoes. Describes being physically assaulted by Jordan after being made to repeatedly clean his shoes and after refusing to eat a meal. Recalls Jordan being made to apologise to Witness 36 for his actions. Comments on awareness of Morag Jordan being strict despite lack of contact with her. Recollections of a points system being introduced by a member of staff at Haut de la Garenne between 1985 and 1986, noting how only Aviemore was running by this point. Provides details about the points system, noting how tokens were awarded for basic tasks which in turn could be traded for privileges. Comments on staff disapproval of the points system and how one male staff member would goad residents. Asserts to have no recollection of any other residents suffering or complaining of sexual abuse, recalling physical approach to discipline taken by some members of staff towards particular residents. Includes comment about staff not knowing how to deal with one particular male resident.
