Background and Home Life Details early life with parents, mentioning their separation, and her and her three siblings’ placement at Haut de la Garenne when she was four years old. Names Morag [Jordan, née Kidd] as a member of staff. Recalls talking a packed lunch to school, and being collected from school in the van. Recalls taking the bus to senior school. Details routine after returning from school, mentioning uniform and cleaning shoes. Notes that children would be made to clean all the shoes if they were being punished. Describes dinner times at Haut de la Garenne, and not being able to leave the table until she had eaten part of her meal. Recalls watching the evening news after tea, after which each child would have to pick a story from the news to tell the staff. Describes difficulty sleeping, and mentions that the girls were only allowed to wear nightdresses in bed, and would be in trouble if they were found wearing pants. Recalls that dressing gowns and slippers were kept at the end of the bed in case of a fire alarm. Recalls hearing screaming coming from the detention rooms due to [her dormitory] being located next to the detention rooms. Describes location of the detention rooms as at the end of a corridor near a garage door. Recalls the rooms being green, with beds built into the walls and a big glass window, but without toilets or curtains. Recalls that children were placed in the detention rooms for misbehaviour. Recalls seeing [brother] in the detention rooms whilst she was in a taxi. Describes medicine being distributed to residents from big brown medicine bottles in the office part of the kitchen. Recalls children being given a white chalky medicine thought to have been Kaolin and Morphine if they were sick. Recalls running away to her mother and step-father’s. Comments on mother phoning Children’s Officer [Child Care Officer] Mr [Richard] Davenport who visited along with a female member of staff who had physically abused Witness 98 a few days earlier. Recalls returning to Haut de la Garenne following the visit. Refers to notes made before being visited by the Police. Refers to notes as exhibit number 1. Recalls [her sister’s] distress whilst they were both on a boat, when a man presumed to be a sailor told [Witness 98’s sister] that he would take her away and marry her. Details instance where [Witness 98’s brother] was running around a campsite naked, either as punishment or to evade three members of staff who were trying to get [Witness 98’s brother] to wash. Recalls instance where [her brother] was caned as a form of corporal punishment. Social Services Recalls being placed at Haut de la Garenne by the Children’s Office. Abuse and consequences Recalls physical abuse by a female member of staff, after which Witness 98 ran away with another female resident. Recalls that children would be slapped with an open hand if they talked back to staff. Does not recall witnessing any other physical abuse. Does not recall witnessing any sexual abuse. Events after leaving Care Experiences flashbacks at night, and trouble sleeping. Comments that she began to shout out in her sleep when the enquiry [into institutional child abuse] in Jersey first reached the media. Mentions considering to see a hypnotist for regression therapy. Refers to her statement being the only time she has provided an account of her experiences in care to an authority. Mentions holding a folder on her time in care given to her by the Children’s Office [Children’s Services client file], and that more information is held in the family folder still in the Children’s Office’s possession.
