Entry dated 28 January 1981. Refers to measures to be taken by Haut de la Garenne staff to screen Witness 182's post in order to prevent an instance in which Witness 182 might be helped to abscond. Entry dated 29 January 1981. Refers to advice from the Director of Education [John Rodhouse], and contact made with Port Control at [Jersey] Airport, mentioning Sgt [Sergeant] Kerns, and a parcel from 19 January, when Witness 182's mother left the island. Lists reasons why it is suspected Witness 182's mother will attempt to remove her daughter from the island. Notes a warning dated 6 January 1981 in which Witness 182's mother wrote to Witness 182 regarding a new life. Refers to Witness 182's mother's attempts to conceal her whereabouts, and her behaviour over the previous months. Refers to previous instances where Witness 182's mother has disregarded the law, and letters sent to Witness 182, suspected by Haut de la Garenne staff to contain money. Attended Haut de la Garenne as instructed by Children's Officer [C A Smith], and observed a discussion between Haut de la Garenne [Superintendent] Mr [Jim] Thomson and Witness 182 regarding the action being taken to protect both Witness 182 and her mother.
