• Background and Early Life States that he was born in 1946. States that his mother placed him into the care of Westaway Crèche on 26 August 1947 where he remained until 3 July 1952. • Jersey Home for Boys States that he arrived at the Jersey Home for Boys when he was 6, noting that the Home was later known as Haut de la Garenne. Includes recollections of the headmaster when he arrived and the number of staff at the Home. Refers to attendance at St Martin's School whilst he was living at the Jersey Home for Boys, noting that he left school aged 15. Includes recollections of the Home, recalling living in a dormitory with 20 to 30 other children between the ages of 6 and 15. Recalls that a permanent staff member would live permanently in the boys' dormitory and would supervise children whilst they bathed. Includes comments about living standards at the Home, describing disciplinary standards as strict. Recalls one of the boys who had been adopted from the Home committed suicide in the house of his adopted family. States that he later heard that the boy had hanged himself. Also refers to hearing that a long term resident of the Home had committed suicide sometime after leaving the Home. Recalls two other boys with whom he was at the Home with, stating that he has not had any contact with them since leaving on 5 August 1961. • Abuse Recalls that physical abuse by a staff member with an open fist or with a bamboo cane was not uncommon. Describes being sexually abused by an adult male at the Home when he was 12 in a room adjacent to the boys' dormitory. States that he also witnessed other children go into this room and states that he never told anybody in authority or any other children abuse abuse. States that a male staff member would watch residents bathe, referring to inappropriate sexual comments made by him. Recalls an incident where two 11 year old boys were caught together in a toilet. States that all residents were told to go to the courtyard where the two boys taken and told to strip naked. Recalls that residents were instructed to beat the two boys with a bamboo cane or themselves be subject to the same bearings. States that some staff members watched. • Events since leaving Care Refers to seven photographs taken by him and his wife upon their return to Jersey on 15 October 2006.
