Scope and Content

Refers to possibility of Grouville Annexe becoming a leisure centre, noting its original role as the Jersey Female Orphans Home and later the Jersey Home for Girls. Outlines reasons why girls would be admitted to the Home, citing alcoholism of fathers and availability of welfare money to men only. Includes the account of a woman who was sent to the Jersey Female Orphans' Home in 1912 with her sister after she was left on a beach by her mother in the care of 6 year old brother and 5 year old sister. Notes that she only met her mother once in 1922 when she visited the Home, recalling rare visits by her grandmother. Refers to a stigma on illegitimate children. Includes recollections of daily life at the Home, commenting on the food and daily routine, recalling a lack of healthcare provision. Also recalls that the children had to do all household duties and domestic work. Includes a photograph of the Jersey Home for Girls and a photographs of residents of the Jersey Home for Girls with the mayor of Oldham during a visit to Oldham in 1959.
