Scope and Content

States that she was taken into Grouville Girls Orphanage in 1941 aged 6 having spent the first 6 years of her life in Westaway Crèche. States her sisters were also at the Home and that one of her brothers was in the boys' home, Haut de la Garenne. States that she was at the Home until she was 15 at which point she was sent out to service to work an individual until she was 18. Recalls that the Grouville Girls Orphanage was a children's home but that not all residents were orphans. Includes recollections of the layout of the new building, sleeping arrangements and the numbers of girls in residence. Recalls attendance at Grouville School whilst at the Home. Recalls that the staff at the Home were mostly female, commenting on the nature of relationships between staff members. Describes emotional, physical and sexual abuse by staff at the Home. Provides details of physical abuse, referring to: beatings with canes and wooden hair brushes, punishments for bedwetting, regular public beatings, ice cold baths, threats of violence for telling anyone what happened in the Home, punishment for being caught talking at night, and being made to sleep on the floor and fed only dry bread and water as punishment for running away. Recalls being given injections in the sitting room by female members of staff in the presence of their male friends. Recalls being subjected to an invasive physical examination/procedure by female staff or female doctor at the medical centre on multiple occasions between the ages of 12 and 14 after being accused of having had sexual intercourse. Recalls punishments for soiled underwear, laughing with another girl and lying or using bad language. Recalls inapproporiate comments and sexual abuse by a male PE teacher. Recalls being restrained in beds with straps and gagged with a cloth if stafff thought residents were going to be violent. Recalls the older girls being made by staff to make residents strip and wash them whilst the staff watched, and sexual abuse by staff. Recalls being locked in a small room without windows as punishment for up to 3 days and only ever being referred to by as numbers and not names, recalling her number. Includes comments about the clothing and food provided at the Home, recalling being force fed uneaten and unwanted food. Recalls punishments, mentioning peeling potatoes for over 100 girls and staff for a week alone in the scullery and scrubbing kitchen tiles. Recalls seeing her parents once a month on a Sunday, noting that any gifts or money given to her by her parents was conviscated by staff. Recalls girls being physically dragged away and punished if they were caught trying to tell their parents about physical abuse. Describes being aware of girls disappearing from the home on occasion and response of staff when questioned. Finishes with reflections of her time at the Home, commenting on the physical, emotional and sexual abuse she and other girls were subjected to.
