Outlines purpose of the statement to set out his response to various allegations made against him relating to the period during the 1960s when he regularly took children resident at Haut de la Garenne out for day trips. Refers to having had two strokes since 2004 when he was interviewed by the police as part of their investigation into allegations made against him by a former resident, describing impact of the strokes on his memory. Describes being blackmailed in 2003 by one of the children who he had taken out on trips from Haut de la Garenne in the 1960s. Recalls meeting the former resident many years after the trips had taken place and then receiving a phone call from the former resident in 2003 asking if he knew where he could borrow £10,000. States that the former resident asked him if he could lend the money, and that the former resident got angry when he said he could not. Notes that he shortly after received a collage of pictures suggesting that he was a paedophile and a video tape followed by a request that he leave money for the former resident in a specified location accompanied by a threat. Refers to having reported the incident to the police and refers to a statement provided to the police on the matter [Exhibit 1: C/D/AW2/A1/6/WD007097/1]. States that the former resident was arrested and subsequently convicted of blackmail. Refers to a series of allegations made against him by the former resident following his arrest for blackmail. States that he denies the allegations of abuse made against him having also denied them during a police interview in April 2004. Denies allegation that he sexually abused the former resident on a boat moored in Gorey Harbour on multiple [Exhibit 2: C/D/AW2/A1/6/WD007097/2]. Refers to a document suggesting that a child had been on a boat with him [Exhibit 3: C/D/AW2/A1/6/WD007097/3], stating that he did not own a boat at Gorey Harbour and asserting that he never took any child out on any boat, including a boat moored at Gorey or on his speedboat. Denies allegation that he regularly committed indecent acts on the former resident in his car whilst parked in a lane [Exhibit 4: C/D/AW2/A1/6/WD007097/4], asserting that he never had a lone child in his car with him other than possibly [a child boarded out with him]. Denies allegation that he sexually abused the former resident in a room in a hotel [Exhibit 5: C/D/AW2/A1/6/WD007097/5]. Denies allegation that he sexually abused the former resident in the kitchen at his home whilst his wife was in the next room [Exhibit 6: C/D/AW2/A1/6/WD007097/6]. Refers to a notepad located during a search of his home containing references to a number of pornographic website addresses, stating that these were sent to him as junk email and that he had been asked to write these addresses down by someone from his internet service provider with a view to them being blocked [Exhibit 7: C/D/AW2/A1/6/WD007097/7]. Notes that he accepted in interview with police that he had viewed indecent photographs of boys and had kept a magazine photograph of boys, but categorically denies that he has ever abused any child. Also refers to an Officer’s report dated 4 June 2009 [Exhibit 8: C/D/AW2/A1/6/WD007097/8] repeating the various allegations and factual matters and an additional allegation that a child punched him and left the car after he sexually abused the child. Denies that the incident ever happened, stating that has no recollection of ever going out with a child alone and driving down a secluded track. Also refers to an extract of a statement of Witness 126 dated 8 May 2008 describing a similar incident in a car [Exhibit 9: C/D/AW2/A1/6/WD007097/9], stating to have no recollection of the incident. Describes being shocked by the allegations made against him, stating that they are wholly unfounded. Comments on his motivation for taking children from Haut de la Garenne out for the day, stating that in hindsight he would never taken children out by himself stating that doing so made him vulnerable to false allegations being made against him.
