Scope and Content

Background and Home Life States to have been born in 1960 and that his father committed suicide the year he was born. Recalls being aged 2 when his mother met his stepfather, noting that the family moved to Jersey shortly after. States to have had a fraught relationship with his mother and siblings, often running away from home as a result. Cites abscondence as reason for involvement of Children's Services in 1971. Institutions Refers to La Préférence as a vegetarian home. Includes recollections of staff at La Préférence, including a female member of staff who emigrated, a young couple who he recalled as being strict, cleaners, a cook and a vegan couple who were at the home for a two week period when the individual was aged 15 or 16. Also includes recollections of other residents at La Préférence, recalling that 3 or 4 children shared a room. Provides details about daily routine at La Préférence. Refers to attendance at St Mark's School, noting that he left school aged 15. States to have visited Haut de la Garenne but to have never been a resident there, recalling use of the swimming pool during the summer. Oulines understanding regarding the type of children who went to Haut de la Garenne, referring to one former resident at La Préférence who was later admitted to Haut de la Garenne. Comments on the size of the building at Haut de la Garenne. Includes reflections on his time at La Préférence, stating to have remained there until he was aged 21. Children's Services Recalls placement into La Préférence following intervention by Children's Services due to him frequently running away from home. Abuse and Consequences Recalls being subjected to physical abuse by staff at La Préférence as punishment for misbehaviour, running away, disobedience or smoking. Describes being caned, smacked and hit with a belt, referring to injuries sustained. Also recalls other forms of punishment including loss of pocket money, being sent to his room and not being given food. Describes staff at La Préférence as cruel on occasions. Recalls witnessing a member of staff physically abuse another child. States to have never witnessed any assaults at Haut de la Garenne and refers to having been shown two padded cells at Haut de la Garenne.
