Scope and Content

Sets out details of problems experienced during Court process regarding child abuse cases, including the need to: translate and explain to child witnesses; cross examine other witnesses and the accused; represent to the Court the effects of the abuse upon the child and family; and protect the child victim’s interests and welfare during the Court process. Also refers to decisions of the prosecution Centenier in recent abuse cases, outlines a number of reasons why there may be a time lapse since the abuse before cases are brought to court, refers to physical problems with the Court set up contributing unnecessarily to the child witness ordeal, addresses need for standardisation in respect of special arrangements for child witnesses and refers to the absence of a video link system and comments on the admissibility of video evidence.
