Scope and Content

Provides details about her background, stating that she born in England in 1943 before moving to Jersey where she was educated. Notes that she returned to England after leaving school, married her first husband aged 19 and separated after nine years, returning to Jersey with her children. Provides details of her involvement in childcare in Jersey, firstly as a childminder before applying to work at Clos des Sables Family Group Home. States that she had no qualifications at time of applying, recalling conversations with [the houseparents] and an interview with Charles Smith before being offered the job. Recalls receiving a book containing information all of the children who lived at Clos des Sables. Includes a description of her role and responsibilities at Clos des Sables and details of her weekly working hours and wage. Notes lack of handover discussions with [the housemother] when starting her shift and recollections of relief and support staff. Recalls moving into the Family Group Home to cover whilst [the houseparents] were on leave. Describes the set-up at Clos des Sables, commenting on the background and needs of the children, room layout of the property and remarks about the house being cramped and at full capacity. States that she did not receive any training during the 15 years she worked at Clos des Sables. Includes comments about the environment within the Family Group Home and remarks about the running of the Home. Includes comments about [the houseparents] and their impact on the negative environment of the Home, remarking on the quality of care and strictness of [the housemother] and the financial management of the Home. Refers to the departure of [the houseparents] in 1989 and comments about the new management of the Home, remarking on the more relaxed environment at Clos des Sables upon the arrival of a female member of staff. Recalls that the children were also assigned new Child Care Officers during this period, naming Hal Coomer and Danny Wherry. Refers to the closure of Clos des Sables soon after and her transfer to La Préférence. Includes comments about Children's Services, referring to each child being allocated their own Child Care Officer and her recollections of the supervised nature of visits by these Child Care Officers when they saw the children.
