March 12th 1975 - April 16th 1975

Scope and Content

• Extract from minutes of a meeting of the Children's Sub-Committee dated 12 March 1975. Refers to concerns highlighed by an individual over the care of children at La Préférence Children's Home, mentioning difficulty caused by inexperienced child care staff and the inability of the Governing Body of the Home to recruit trained staff who were vegetarian. Also includes items relating to an increase in the boarding out rates and details of the annual Foster Parents Reunion. • Extract from minutes of a meeting of the Children's Sub-Committee dated 16 April 1975. Refers to unsatisfactory conditions at La Préférence having been resolved following the resignation of staff and [Christine Wilson's] reappointment on the understanding that a minimum of four child care staff were employed to care for the 20 children resident there, noting that staff need not necessarily be vegetarian. Refers to the Children's Officer's attendance in London of the Annual General Meeting of the Vegetarian Home (Jersey) Limited, where the Children's Officer accepted a nomination as a Vice President of the Home, and agreed to help establish a local Committee to administer the Home. Also notes decision to increase the charge per child per day at La Préférence. Also lists those present and in attendance at the meeting, and includes an item regarding the Children's Officer's Report. • Letter dated 16 April 1975 by the Children's Officer regarding the Vegetarian Home for Children (Jersey). Refers to receipt of a request from the Committee of the Vegetarian Children's Home that the amount paid for children in care be increased. Refers to the resignation of the Housemother and the recruitment of unsatisfactory staff following a period of understaffing during costs of each child per day were more than the charge per child per day. Refers to resolution of the situation following the return of [Christine Wilson and her husband] on condition that staffing levels increase, noting that this will result in increased expenditure on staff salaries. Recommends that an amount of £2.75 per child per day be paid for children placed at La Préférence, effective 1 May 1975.
