• Letter dated 22 April 1974 from the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Nursing Officer and Director of the Social Work Service, Department of Health and Social Security to Area Medical Officers, Area Nursing Officers and Area Administrators of Family Practitioner Committees of Area Health Authorities and Directors of Social Services of Area Health Authorities (Teaching), Metropolitan District Councils, Non-Metropolitan County Councils, London Borough Councils and the City of London. Reiterates professional guidance about the diagnosis, care, prevention and local organisation necessary for the management of cases involving non-accidental injury to children. Notes need for regular joint review of all aspects of the management of cases, detailing request for the establishment of area review committees for this purpose. Outlines needs for the provision of written guidance and in-service training to doctors, nurses and social workers in the hospital, the social worker and the health visitor in the field, the clerical staff involved and others on action to take when they suspect that a child is in danger or are confronted with a suspected case. Outlines desired outcome of public interest in the matter and request by the Secretary of State for a report at the end of 1974. • Memorandum on Non-Accidental Injury to Children. Includes an introduction outlining need to check and strengthen measures to prevent, diagnose and manage cases of non-accidental injury to children. Outlines guidance with respect to diagnosis, care, management and rehabilitation, and local organisation, recommending the formation of area review committees.
