Scope and Content

Madeleine Louise Norman was born in Jersey on 30 June 1889, the daughter of Arthur John Norman and Louisa Mallett. A trained nurse by profession, she lived and worked in Cannes in the South of France for a number of years, including throughout most of the Second World War but returned to Jersey each holiday. She eventually returned to Jersey to live after the Occupation, residing at Anne Port and later in the Grouville Annexe, Sandybrook Hospital. She died in April 1978. The collection includes: Red Cross messages from Miss Norman to friends and relatives in Jersey; letters from the Red Cross to Miss Norman relaying messages from friends and relatives; letters, postcards and greeting cards from friends and family to Miss Norman; postcards from Stalag III-D prisoner-of-war camp; papers relating to Miss Norman's residence in France and time spent in Portugal; photographs from the Occupation and Stalag III-D; photographic postcards; newscuttings; and some miscellaneous items.
