Images which relate to the rescue of crew members from the American Destroyer USS Sellers who were travelling back to ship on a whaleboat after a night out when the boat was hit by a wave and the sailors thrown into the sea. Eight sailors swam back to ship and the States launch, Duchess of Normandy, picked up 11 other crewmen. Coxswain Graeme Mercier and crew members Jean Rivoallan and Graeme Marett subsequently received awards from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution for their part in the Rescue. [The entry in the 1976 Photographers' Diary references Liberty Boat and a whaleboat].
